iPhone Evolution from 2007-2022

Did you guys know that there was no iPhone 2? After Apple created the first generation iPhone, the 3G internet trend emerged which inspired the iPhone 3G, so the iPhone 2 was passed over. How about iPhone 9? Well, Apple also missed it and immediately presented the iPhone X.

So for those who are curious, here is the evolution of the iPhone from the first generation which was released in 2007 to its newest addition, namely the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

iPhones (June 29, 2007):

The first iPhones only had a maximum of 16 GB of storage. Indeed, at that time there were not many large files that required large storage capacities as needed today. In addition, this first generation iPhone only had 128 MB of RAM. A very big difference compared to today's cellphones which can reach tens of Gigabytes. The camera is still 2 MP resolution.

iPhone 3G (11 June 2008):

The iPhone 3G is not much different from the first iPhone in terms of internal specifications. But on this iPhone series, the App Store application store has been added. With its 3G connectivity, this iPhone got its name, as well as being the first iPhone that can be relied upon to access the internet stably.

iPhone 3GS (19 June 2009):

With the iPhone 3GS, Apple introduced a 32GB storage option, double that of the first iPhone. The App Store's huge impact quickly changed things. The memory capacity of 16 GB in the old series is certainly not enough among the photos, music and applications available in the application store. The camera was upgraded to 3 MP and added video recording. Apple also added Voice Control.

iPhone 4 (June 24, 2010):

iPhone 4 is the first iPhone to have a front camera. Little did Apple know, selfies were about to take over the world. The iPhone 4 also gets a Retina display. With 512 MB of memory, it can handle more work than the iPhone 3GS, which only has 256 MB of memory.

iPhone 4S (14 October 2011):

There is a big difference between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S: the camera went from 5 MP to 8 MP. Apple also introduced a 64GB storage option although the RAM memory remains at 512MB. Video recording is also upscaled to 1080p. This iPhone series is also the first iPhone equipped with Siri.

iPhone 5 (21 September 2012):

Apple sold 5 million iPhone 5 in the first week. The camera remains the same, but the memory is increased to 1 GB. This iPhone 5 already has 4G connectivity, aka LTE. Apple also introduced the Lightning connector in the iPhone 5. For the first time in history, the screen just got bigger! All previous generation screens were 3.5 inches, while the iPhone 5 was 4 inches.

iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c (20 September 2013):

Between the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, Apple sold 9 million phones in its first week on sale. The iPhone 5c is cheaper and has a plastic case. The iPhone 5c has four different colors, but not too much difference than the iPhone 5. On the other hand, the iPhone 5s introduced Touch ID, dual flash and video for slow motion. Plus, an M7 motion coprocessor is included, which improves device performance while helping to conserve battery life.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus (19 September 2014):

The internal specifications of the iPhone 6 are very similar to those of the iPhone 5s. The biggest difference is that it has a bigger screen and offers a bigger size variant called iPhone 6 Plus. Using a high-resolution retina display, this iPhone series also comes with storage options up to 128GB. Even so, the amount of RAM is still the same, and the camera has no increase in megapixels.

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus (19 September 2015):

Apple has made a lot of improvements to the iPhone 6s. The camera jumps from 8 MP to 12 MP, which is a big leap forward. RAM memory has also doubled from 1GB to 2GB. After the iPhone 6 had some bending issues, Apple provided the iPhone 6s with 7000 series aluminum to make sure it doesn't happen again. Finally, 3D Touch was also introduced in this series.

iPhone SE (31 March 2016):

Apart from 3D Touch, the iPhone SE has all the internal specs that are better than the iPhone 6s. Overall, the iPhone SE was launched as a more affordable option and in fact it was very much liked by many.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (16 September 2016)

Apple has finally abandoned the 16GB storage option that was a constant presence a few years before. The initial storage capacity of the regular iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is 32GB, up to 256GB. Apple also introduced a new dark and glossy Jet Black color.

Thanks to the new dual camera which significantly improves the zoom function, as well as support for portrait mode, the iPhone 7 Plus is more popular than previous Plus models.

The most controversial feature of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus may be one that Apple removed: the headphone jack. This series of iPhones comes with EarPods that plug into the Lightning port and a traditional headset adapter. While announcing that they would be canceling the headphone jack, Apple introduced its Wireless AirPods.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (22 September 2017)

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus introduced us to Wireless Charging technology with a glass cover on the back of the iPhone. The dual cameras are extraordinary, with a resolution of 12 MP each, making the shots on this iPhone series practically of premium quality. In addition, the true-tone display on the screen increases user satisfaction when watching videos/movies by automatically reducing blue light exposure.

iPhone X (3 November 2017)

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, Apple launched the iPhone X. It was priced starting at $999, making it Apple's most expensive iPhone at the time. This series of iPhones removed the home button and Touch ID and replaced them with biometric security. In addition to these changes, there are also improvements to the screen sector, front camera and portrait mode.

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max (21 September 2018)

At an event held at the Steve Jobs Theater in September 2018, Apple skipped the iPhone 9, and went ahead with announcing the XS and XS Max. Both iPhones already have a portrait mode on the front camera. The screen is very clear, with a Super Retina HD display that makes it even more premium. The biggest improvement is also updating the A12 bionic chip which can increase processing capability while reducing battery consumption.

iPhone XR (26 October 2018)

At the September 2018 event, the iPhone XR was also announced, but it only became available some time after. This iPhone is smaller than the XS and XS Max phones. The screen isn't as bright as the XS and XS Max, but the difference isn't as stark with the Liquid Retina HD display. The front camera is equally high quality and comes in more colors than the XS or XS Max.

iPhone 11 (20 September 2019):

The iPhone 11 is the cheapest in the annual lineup of iPhones, but still has the best features that make it the most popular iPhone in 2019. Equipped with a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina screen, the iPhone 11 comes in six tempting color variants. The dual camera on the back of the iPhone 11 (both 12 MP) provides a Wide Angle Lens and an Ultra-Wide Angle Lens which makes it one of the highlights of this series.

iPhone 11 Pro (20 September 2019)

iPhone 11 Pro has the sharpest and clearest 5.8-inch Super Retina XDR display from Apple at that time. The phone is equipped with not two, but three, 12 MP HDR camera lenses, offering wide, ultra wide, and telephoto lenses.

iPhone 11 Pro Max (20 September 2019)

Apple's biggest and most expensive phone in 2019 is the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The screen is Super Retina XDR, the same as the iPhone 11 Pro, but at 6.5 inches. The Pro Max has the same triple-lens camera setup as the 11 Pro

iPhone SE (Second Generation) (24 April 2020)

The second-generation iPhone SE offers many of the features of Apple's most expensive iPhone, including the A13 bionic chip, an advanced camera system, high-definition video, wireless charging capabilities, and longer battery life.

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini (23 October 2020):

The recently launched iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini have a Super Retina XDR display with a “Ceramic Shield” which is claimed to be 4 times harder to crack. All iPhone 12 variants use the A14 Bionic chip and offer a 5G network. Both models offer dual 12 MP cameras that offer Wide Angle and Ultra-Wide Angle as well as Night Mode for better quality photos in low light conditions.

iPhone 12 Pro (23 October 2020):

The iPhone 12 Pro adds one more 12MP camera to the dual 12MP cameras of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini, and has several internal improvements, such as 17 hours of video playback (compared to 15 hours of iPhone 12). iPhone 12 Pro has all the features of iPhone 12 like water resistance, tougher screen and LiDAR Sensor for faster focusing and better AR/VR.
